We started off the Grand Am season for the test weekend on January 7th. I never expected to encounter snow, sleet, rain, and freezing temperatures in Daytona! We had incredibly cold weather throughout our weekend. The track and facilities were massive and the track itself was quite intimidating.
I’m running with the Next Generation team again in the same car I drove last year at VIR. We’ve got a new paint scheme on the car, a new car number (36), and I have a new co driver, Chris Brown. Testing went well on Thursday and Friday. The car seemed to handle well and we spent the sessions getting acquainted with the track and familiar with the car. Chris drove in MX-5 Cup last season but had not had any time in the BMW yet. I’ve never driven a track quite like Daytona. It’s similar to Phoenix International Raceway but I was not prepared for the incredible banking of the track. For an example, California Speedway is banked 13 degrees. Daytona is banked 31 degrees; almost 3 times the banking….and believe me, you definitely felt it. It’s hard to describe the feeling. Photos and video do not really show the actual feeling of being out on the track. Read more
